Different Lighting Types Home Owners Must Understand

Thursday, 1 June 2017

All of us have purchased lighting products at some point or the other. However, very few of us know that there are different types of lighting and their applications are different. Knowing this can help you in planning and installing the right kind of lights, fixtures and lighting accessories for the interiors and exteriors of buildings. Here are the three major kinds of lights you will need to know.
Ambient Lighting (General Lighting)
Ambient lighting also called as the general lighting is the most common type of lighting we always see around us and usually buy in the market. This is a soft glow that covers the entire scape inside a room just enough for you to function without any harsh glare. In cinematography and photography, this lighting is also called as natural light within a room. One limitation to ambient lighting is you cannot depend on it to work closely with things or to highlight the things present around you in the room. Recessed or track lights work well with several kinds of ceilings. If the ceiling is low, you must ensure the light you choose is not harsh. Chandeliers and pendent lighting are options under this segment to create stunning effects inside your home.
Task Lighting
You may say accent lighting or task lighting is a smaller or more concentrated light. You will need task lighting when you are working. Some people also call this office lighting. When you do projects, task lighting can help you. This finer light is a great option for reading, cooking, writing, sewing, painting and several other works. While installing task lighting, you must use it as a contrasting light. When you have a low room lit with a desk lamp turned on, it is a more effective set up to work on the desk with a lesser glare when compared to lighting the whole room with a bright light.
Accent Lighting

Accent lighting is a highly concentrated lighting that is installed with the goal of drawing the eyes to the given focal point. This is an invaluable way to add style and a dramatic effect to your interiors. The main purpose of accent lighting is to illumine the pictures or objects you wish to highlight. The other dull areas can be shadowed. The different applications of accent lighting are wall washing, bookcase displays, art work, pieces of furniture, showcasing the collectibles and the general architecture of your home.
